Abstract

This paper aims to analyze an archaeological assemblage consisting of 15 artifacts made from Cervus elaphus antlers (no=12), Bos taurus bones (no=2), and a Sus scrofa tooth (no=1). These artifacts originate from a Bronze Age tell settlement associated with Otomani pottery style, located at Sântion–Dealul Mănăstirii, Bihor County. A technological transformation analysis of the raw materials was conducted, identifying the techniques employed in each of the two primary operations of the technological procedures: debitage and shaping. The presence of intermediate products within the chaîne opératoire (preforms and blanks) offered valuable insights into the debitage techniques, which are typically no longer discernible at the finished artifacts. Additionally, the analysis of 11 items from a single archaeological context (Cxt. 35) facilitated the development of a hypothesis regarding the possible operation of a modest workshop dedicated to deer antler processing. The examination of the finished artifacts involved use–wear analysis and an assessment of their potential functions. The assemblage exhibits distinctive characteristics of the osseous industry associated with the Otomani pottery style, particularly in terms of raw materials, typology, and technological methods.
